About Governance Works

Background

Governance Works was established in 2001 to influence and impact upon the quality of governance in not-for-profit organisations. We understand the challenges facing not-for-profit organisations and in the past year alone we have improved board performance and governance systems for over 30 organisations.

Who we are

Governance Works has two directors; Rhona Howarth and Christine Morrison. Between us we have wide experience of working with boards in the not-for-profit sector including charities, voluntary organisations, social enterprises, co-operatives, partnerships and associations.

We have a network of close associates who bring specific expertise in areas of governance such as legal structures, board recruitment, strategic planning and development and crisis support.

The directors and associates draw upon their experience of governance practice in the UK and internationally.

What we do

Governance Works provides support to the boards of not-for-profit organisations to ensure they have the necessary understanding of governance and the skills to fulfil their roles and responsibilities.

We provide:

• Training for boards, as well trainers and advisers

• Expertise and guidance for boards and staff

• Resources to assist boards, as well as trainers and advisers

Who we work with

We work with boards and board members, senior staff, company secretaries, chairpersons. We also work with trainers, advisers, funders and infrastructure organisations supporting the not-for-profit sector. Recently we have worked with Seven Stories, Northern Cultural Skills Partnership, Northern Film and Media, The Ouseburn Trust, Sunderland Children’s Centre, Durham Young People’s Centre and Blyth Valley Enterprise Ltd amongst others.
